On 4 August 2020, a large amount of ammonium nitrate stored at the port of the city of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, exploded, causing at least 200 deaths, 3 reported missing, 6,500 injuries, US$10–15 billion in property damage, and leaving an estimated 300,000 people homeless.
The explosion moderately damaged 4 hospitals and severely damaged 4 others, including the Karantina hospital, located just 900 metres from the blast zone.
Karantina hospital sustained approximately $8 Million in damages.
Beirut’s only public hospital, Karantina, welcomes all patients regardless of their ability to pay, including refugees.
Its children’s ward sustained major damages. The pediatric ICS was nearly destroyed.
The Rotary Club of Beirut Cosmopolitan
The Rotary Club of Beirut Cosmopolitan will lead the resupply of critical medical equipment to the operating theatre in the Pediatrics/Neonatal Ward of Karantina Hospital - Global Grant (application GG2119172)
An estimated cost of $395,000 USD. Equipment includes an operating table, operating light, anesthesia machine, OR monitor, laparoscopy system, urethoscope and C-Arm, along with critical equipment training.
Implementation is expected to begin Jan 4, 2021 and expected to conclude March 1, 2021.
